Sights Malaga

Malaga is beautiful, although most tourists only know Malaga as a gateway to southern Spain and most of them immediately travel on to other places in Andalusia. But Malaga is well worth a visit because of the interesting museums, the beautiful buildings from the Moorish period, the many terraces and countless tapas bars, luxury shops and beautiful beaches.

The Alcazaba is definitely worth a visit. This fortress, built by the Moors in the 11th century, is located high above the bay of Malaga and overlooks the city. From the Alcazaba you have a beautiful view of the bullring built in 1874 with a capacity of 15,000 people. Also visit the adjacent Gibralfaro, a castle built in the 14th century by the Islamic king Yusuf. The Roman Theatre is located near the Alcazaba, was only discovered in 1951 and is free to visit. The cathedral in Malaga is a mixture of architectural styles due to the exceptionally long construction period from 1528, after the Christians conquered Malaga, until 1782 when the construction was finished. Malaga has many museums including the archaeological museum, the recently opened Carmen Thyssen and the Picasso Museum.

The centre of Malaga has many shops. In the summer there are shade cloths above the main shopping street Calle Larios which, in addition to shade, provides a beautiful effect. There are many squares with tapas bars and terraces. At the train station Maria Zambrano there is a large covered shopping centre with countless shops. Near the airport you will find the shopping centre Plaza Mayor with a cinema and restaurants.

Important festivities in Malaga are the Christmas week, Carnival, Semana Santa (the week before Easter) with impressive processions through the city, the night of San Juan on 23 June with campfires on the beaches and the Feria around 19 August.

We ourselves regularly go to the market at the harbour on Sundays, they call it a “mercadillo”. Beautiful clothing stalls and more, wonderful to walk and a good view of all the boats / cruises that are there or arriving.

What are the differences between markets such as a ‘Mercado’, a ‘Mercadillo’ and a ‘Rastro’? —A mercado is a fresh market with vegetables, fruit, fish, meat etc.

—At a mercadillo you can find shoes, clothing, jewelry and gadgets. But here you can also find vegetable and fruit stalls.

—A rastro is an antique - junk - flea market.

On the website of https://www.magnifiekmalaga.nl/marktjes/ you can find all dates and locations.
